The Dutch island of Texel aims to become fully energy-neutral by 2020. Recently, this ambition has received support from Tvilight and Dynniq who have equipped the entire island with a cutting-edge connected street lighting infrastructure. Thanks to Tvilight motion-sensing controllers, the streetlights dim automatically when there are no people on the streets and brighten back up when human presence is registered. This technology, known as “light on demand”, allows the municipality to slash the lighting energy consumption and preserve natural nocturnal darkness on the island.
Texel demonstrates the positive transformational effects of intelligent street lighting on nature and the environment as it has become a place where everyone can enjoy the starry night sky without the devastating effect of light pollution. Having stepped over to new LEDs with integrated light controllers, the municipality now powers all streetlights on the island using only solar energy, which makes Texel the first Dutch municipality with fully energy-neutral public lighting. Furthermore, thanks to Tvilight open APIs, intelligent lighting infrastructure will serve as a platform for future Smart City/IoT applications.
