Background

Located in the south of the Netherlands, Eeneind is a historic village in the municipality of Nuenen. Famous for being a home to Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, Eeneind is a scenic town with rural surroundings. While the municipality and its residents take pride in their connection to the past, they believe in modern energy efficient solutions.

Tvilight’s adaptive lighting control is an excellent solution, it has allowed us to save energy as well as manage the street lights remotely. I truly believe that this is the future for the Netherlands, Europe and the world.

Robin BrekelmansProject Manager, Municipality of Nuenen

Challenge

The City Council of Eeneind approached Tvilight to help them renew its public lighting. The Council’s wish was to make use of modern intelligent street lighting solutions while maintaining the classic style and feel of a 19th century town.

Solution

Tvilight’s adaptive lighting solution is an ideal fit for a residential town such as ‘Van Gogh Village’. To satisfy the needs of the City Council, sensor based units (CitySense) were installed on street lights throughout the village. The units dim the lights to 20% when there is no activity in the streets, and increase the brightness to 100% upon the detection of a pedestrian, cyclist or a car. The CitySense units communicate with neighboring units over a wireless mesh network signaling them to also increase their brightness, thus ensuring that the occupant is surrounded by a safe circle of light at all times.

Using Tvilight’s web-based remote management software, CityManager, the municipality now has the ability to control the village’s outdoor lighting characteristics. By defining the dimming levels, the lamp hold time and other settings, the municipality ensures comfortable and safe light levels while achieving excellent energy savings.
